Not all mammals give life birth. One order, Monotremata, lays eggs. These mammals are similar to other mammals in that they produce milk, are warm-blooded, and have hair. Scientists believe monotremes are evolutionary survivors from an early split from reptile tree. Other mammals likely evolved later, developing live birth rather than eggs. Also, while monotremes are warm-blooded, they do have a lower metabolism than most other mammals. Platypus are well-known examples of monotremes.
