Amy Vanderbilt on Living within Your Means

This time, Ms. Vanderbilt is exceedingly wise. She states "It is never a disgrace to say 'I can't afford it.'" A person should never be urged to explain why, for that person may have private obligations to elderly relatives, charities, etc. Ms. Vanderbilt feels it is more shameful to agree to buy something out of your means rather than to be honest and wise in declaring that purchase above your means.
