According to
National Geographic, the Arctic Tern (
Sterna paradisaea) has the longest migration of any other animal. The small tern "lives in an endless summer," spending the breeding season in the Arctic then flying half-way around the world to winter in the Antarctic. On average, the Arctic Tern makes an annual round-trip voyage of 44,000 miles.
Fun fact: The bird averages 18.6 miles per hour during migration.
