Recent law changes in Romania have prompted Romanian witches to toss poisonous mandrake into the Danube River to curse the government and president. Previously, a loophole allowed witches, fortunetellers, and astrologers to avoid paying income tax. But with the Romanian economy in recession and government revenue lacking, the government went searching for new areas tax income. Witches will now be required to pay a 16% income tax and pay into health and pension programs.
However, some witches are happy about the law because it gives their profession and way of life formal recognition.
